Iran goalkeeper and Guinness World Record holder Alireza Beiranvand could prove to be a tricky customer for teams during matches in the 2022 FIFA World Cup not just because of his shot-stopping skills.
In the modern game, the role of the goalkeeper has changed a lot with managers like Pep Guardiola using his shot-stopper as the originator of attacks at times.
Beiranvand could do just that for Iran during this year’s World Cup with a secret weapon that helped him set a Guinness World Record.
The 30-year-old entered the record books for the longest hand-held throw during an official game when Iran squared off against South Korea in Tehran, on October 11, 2016.
Beiranvand sent the ball a whooping 61.66 meters upfield during the game which almost opened up an opportunity for his team to score a goal. The 30-year-old’s former club Boavista released a statement on the same last year about his incredible feat.
“Alireza Biranvand is officially in the Guinness World Records for the longest hand-held throw during an official game. The Boavista FC goalkeeper received the distinction for the mark achieved in a match with the Iran national team.”

The match between England and Iran will be the first of three games on Monday with Netherlands taking on Senegal in the second fixture and USA vs Wales rounding off the day.
It will be interesting to see if Beiranvand will deploy his secret weapon during the Qatar 2022 world cup.
