Somaliland and Ethiopia have signed a memorandum of understanding earlier this month that will enable Ethiopia to have a leased sea channel for use by the Ethiopian navy, becoming the first country to recognize the independence of Somaliland.
The Memorandum of Understanding, which attracted the attention of the world, was encouraged and supported by all the landlocked countries in Africa.
This action led to the announcement of the Association of Landlocked Countries on the African Continent with a total of 16 countries.
The organization called UMFA (United Maritime for Africa), is united in the countries of Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Ethiopia, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mali, Niger, Rwanda, South Sudan, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The countries have all expressed great support for the agreement between Somaliland and Ethiopia and pointed out that it will play a significant role in the economic growth of the African continent.
